Victor Yushchenko has met with His Royal Highness Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, President's press ofice reported.

They discussed bilateral relations. The President said Ukraine sought closer economic ties with Great Britain and added that the 2005 turnover rate between the two countries was estimated at USD 1.4 bln

In his turn, Prince Andrew assured Mr. Yushchenko that Ukraine was an important partner for the United Kingdom. He said that “Great Britain’s interest in Ukraine is growing.”

“We welcome your achievements in the development of democratic society and market economy,” he said. “Great Britain wants to see Ukraine stable, safe, prosperous and independent and thereby is ready to continue helping your country introduce economic reforms and build democracy.”

“We appreciate our bilateral relations and the contribution the royal family and British government make in their development,” said Victor Yushchenko.

He told the Duke of York Ukraine would not change its Euro-Atlantic course.

“When we speak about our country’s foreign policy we never forget about European integration, for we do not separate ourselves from the European home,” he said, adding that Ukraine really appreciated the support of international community. The Head of State opined that “our society gradually realizes the propriety of this course.”

Prince Andrew said Great Britain supported Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations.

“We hope your new government will continue to implement the strategy of driving Ukraine closer to the European Union by introducing domestic reforms and will also overcome obstacles impeding your country’s  WTO accession,” he said, adding that the entry into the World Trade Organization would “boost investment and strengthen trade ties with European states.”

Then they discussed Ukraine’s investment climate. The Chief of State said he was pleased with the dynamics of British investment in the Ukrainian economy.

They also spoke about military cooperation and discussed some political issues.

Foreign Minister Borys Tarasyuk and Deputy Head of Mission Martin Harris attended the meeting.
