In an interview with the Romanian newspaper “Cotidianul,” Victor Yushchenko said Ukraine was trying to protect the Danube environment while restoring the deep-water navigable canal in the mouth of the river Bystre.

“Ukraine is trying to balance economic and environmental aspects. We are all conscious of the importance to preserve this unique land for our future generations,” he said, President's press office reported.

The President reiterated that Ukraine had initiated a complex international monitoring of the Danube delta to prevent harmful influences on its environment.

“Implementing this project, we actively cooperate with Romania,” he said, adding that one of the committees of the Ukraine-Romania Presidential Commission was in charge of promoting sustainable development and environmental security.

The Head of State said one of the major goals to build the Bystre canal was to resolve social and economic problems of the region.
