Victor Yushchenko has invited Israeli President Moshe Katsav to a September forum in Kyiv to mark the 65th anniversary of the Baby Yar massacre, the president press ofice informed.

In his letters, President Yushchenko wrote: “Your participation would confirm the great role Israel has played in preserving memory.”

The Head of State added that Baby Yar, the site of a mass grave of victims that were killed by Nazi SS squads between 1941 and 1943, became the symbol of the first stage of the systematic state-sponsored extermination of millions of men, women and children of different nationalities during the World War II.

“We have the unique chance to help the world and particularly our younger generations appreciate the lessons of history and prevent national hatred and discrimination.”
