On May 30, Kateryna Yushchenko visited the White House to meet with Laura Bush, America’s First Lady.

She thanked Mrs. Bush for helping Ukraine combat HIV/AIDS, TB, bird flu and deal with the aftereffects of the Chornobyl accident. The ladies also agreed it was necessary to start exchange programs between Ukraine and the United States, the president press office informed.

Mrs. Yushchenko and Mrs. Bush discussed projects of cooperation between the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation and U.S. medical and educational institutions enabling Ukrainian doctors to cooperate with hospitals in Texas and Florida. Then Ukraine’s First Lady presented the most important project to build a center for maternal and child health in Kyiv, which had only recently been started by her foundation.

Laura Bush asked her guest what her foundation didto honor the victims of the 1932-33 genocide famines. Mrs. Yushchenko told her the state carried out several projects. She added that Ukraine 3000 had collected witness testimonies about the famine and published them on the speical web-site.

Kateryna Yushchenko is now in the United States of America to visit Washington, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. She is going to involve American businessmen, public leaders and medical institutions in helping Ukraineimprove health care for children.

On May 29, the Ukrainian President’s wife met with the Ukrainian community in Washington and visited Georgetown University to present programs of her foundation.
