The Ukrainian government headed by Yuri Yekhanurov has officially resigned after the newly elected Parliament started its first session on Thursday.

But Yekhanurov's cabinet will remain in force until the Verkhovna Rada forms a new government, which should happen within the next 60 days, according to the Ukrainian Constitution .

The Constitution says parliament must first agree on a parliamentary coalition in the next 30 days, and then put forward a candidate for the posts of PM and cabinet members for the president's consideration. If parliament fails to form a coalition and does not put forward candidates within the time limit, President Victor Yushchenko has a right to dismiss the Rada and to call new elections.
