Victor Yushchenko has met with UNESCO Director General Koïchiro Matsuura, President's press office reported.

They discussed relations between Ukraine and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the UN agency that has been helping Ukraine resolve its Chornobyl problems for many years.

The Chief of State presented an award to Mr. Matsuura for “his contribution to the preservation of cultural heritage and promotion of intellectual cooperation with Ukraine.”

In his turn, Mr. Matsuura gave a golden medal with the UNESCO logo to Mr. Yushchenko and said, “This medal is given to Ukraine for what it does to preserve and develop universal human values.”

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Borys Tarasyuk, Emergency Minister Victor Baloha, Humanitarian Premier Vyacheslav Kyrylenko, and First Deputy Foreign Minister Volodymyr Ohryzko attended the meeting.
