In an interview with Kommersant Vlast (Russia), Victor Yushchenko said economic relations between Ukraine and Moldova should be based on international rules, the press office of Ukraine's President informed.
“When we receive a cargo, we must know its history. We do not want any contraband,” he said.
The President added that the current contraband rate was estimated at USD 200-250 mln and so "Ukraine’s budget loses about USD 100 mln every year."
“So we decided to make our customs relations consistent with international norms and procedures,” he said, reiterating that Ukraine is responsible for observing these procedures.
The Head of State also said there was no economic blockade in Trans-dniester: “There is no blockade. There is a self-blockade, for they let some cargoes belonging to the Trans-dniester authorities go. They 'filter' interests. At the same time, myths about the blockade are being actively produced and some of these mythsare supported by Russia’s media.”
Mr. Yushchenko confirmed that Ukraine’s fundamental position in the Trans-dniester conflict was unchanged: "Ukraine believes that Moldova is a sovereignstate. By the way, Russia shares the same opinion. If so, we both agree that this country has a single customs territory.”
