V International Conference “Oil, Gas, Energy and Infrastructure –GIOGIE-2006” took part in Tbilisi on Thursday. The parties considered the pipeline construction project at the preliminary cost of $2 bln. The pipeline will transit gas from the Caspian region to the Central and Eastern Europe. The specially created international consortium works out the project.

According to the draft project calculations, the pipeline extension will be about 1 thousand km (from Ukraine to Georgia) and pipe size – 20 inches. It will be built on the seabed.

In opinion of Georgy Vashakmadze the representative of the consortium, the new pipeline will give a possibility to diversify gas supply for Europe. “Nowadays, this part of the world depends by 25% on the only source of this fuel – Russia,” concluded Vashakmadze.

“The countries-producers, countries-consumers and even transit-countries are interested in the project,” stressed Vahaskmadze.

Roberto Pirani the representative of the consortium, in turns, stated that the technical and economic assessment of the project is currently underway. The experts apprehend possible intersection of the new pipeline with existing one – “The Blue Stream.”

The key point of the new project is its competitiveness, concluded Mr. Pirani.
