President of Ukraine ratified the Law on Animal Protection from Violent Treatment. The new edition of the Law was passed by the parliament on February 21. 267 out of 401 members of the parliament voted for the proposition.
Having made some corrections, the President Yushchenko sent back the Law for parliamentary consideration twice. The President’s remarks touched upon some issues contradicting to the existing legislation, such as the prohibition of keeping over three animals in apartments. This prohibition would violate the statement of the Civil Code of Ukraine which reads about unrestricted number and value of personal property.
The Law regulates the treatment and sale of the wild animals, death letal injection and bio-sterilization.
