Cooperation between Ukraine and the European Union in the energy industry was the main topic of discussion during a meeting between Ukraine's Fuel and Energy Minister Ivan Plachkov and the European Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs in Athens, Greece.

Plachkov and Piebalgs discussed organizational issues involving preparation for the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Ukraine and the European Union in the energy sector in December this year, the Cabinet's press office reported.

Plachkov said that the organizational aspect of the signing of the memorandum has been completed.

They also discussed prior fields of cooperation between Ukraine and the EU on the issue of diversification of energy sources, energy saving, metering of heat energy, integration of the Ukrainian power grid into the UCTE, and a program for production of biological fuel in Ukraine.

Plachkov provided information about the drafting of the feasibility studied for extension of the Odessa-Brody oil pipeline to Plock.

Plachkov stated Ukraine's intention to study the European Union's experience in the area of creating 90-day strategic reserves of petroleum products.

Plachkov also met with the energy ministers of Bulgaria, Moldova, Macedonia, and Greece.
