The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry hails a decision by the Council of Foreign Ministers of the European Union, which was passed on October 3 in Luxembourg, to start negotiations with Turkey on membership in the EU. According to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry's spokesman Vasily Filipchuk, the Ministry views the decision as a historical one, which is aimed at realization of a historical mission of the European Union, which lies in unification of Europe on the basis of common values and purposes.

At the same time, Filipchuk noted, Ukraine hopes that in the process of further enlargement the EU will adhere to integral rules and principles regarding states willing to access the EU, having met the Copenhagen criteria.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry also hailed a decision by the Council of Foreign Ministers of the EU to start membership negotiations with Croatia.
