Trade - Economic relations between Ukraine and the USA were discussed at Ukrainian acting Foreign Minister Borys Tarasyuk's meeting with United States Trade Representative Rob Portman, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry's spokesman Vasyly Filipchuk told Ukrinform. The meeting mainly dealt with Ukraine's accession to the World Trade Organization.

Mr. Portman positively assessed Ukraine's progress in joining the WTO and, particularly, settlement of issues, which obstacle signing a bipartite protocol between Ukraine and the USA on access to markets of goods and services. As he noted, "the United States is optimistic with regard to Ukraine's prospects for accession to the WTO and is ready to further assist it to this end".

Borys Tarasyuk briefed Rob Portman about the political situation in Ukraine and noted that integration with the WTO is the main priority of the President and the new Government. He stressed Ukraine's resoluteness to eliminate all hindrances on the way to complete WTO integration process.

The parties touched on rendering Ukraine the market economy nation status and ensuring Ukraine's access to the US Generalized System of Preferences. Mr. Portman told the Ukrainian acting Foreign Minister that the United States will consider the two matters within near months and sounded optimistic on the issues' positive resolution.
