On Monday evening the ceremony of baptism Andrey Shevchenko’s son took place in the ancient church St.Vincenco in North-Italian city Cernobbio.
PM of Italia Silvio Berlusconi arrived at the ceremony also.
Ukrainian forward Andriy Shevchenko said earlier he planed to take up an offer from Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi to become his son’s godfather.The delay of the ceremony was connected with the busy schedule of Berlusconi.
European Player of the Year Shevchenko added that he and his US-born wife had agreed to baptise their children, alternatively, as Catholics and as Orthodox, the majority faith in Ukraine.
“It will take place according to Catholic tradition. That’s what we decided in our inter-ethnic family. When we have a second child it will be done according to Orthodox tradition.”
However, Berlusconi could not take part in the ceremony as he is divorced and has a second marriage. Catholic Church prohibits divorced people to be godparents.
“As regards them, I feel like a father,” said Berlusconi about Shevchenko and his wife. “I will play the role of godfather.”
