Ukraine took giant steps towards qualification for the 2006 World Cup finals with away victory last night. Andriy Husin secured a 1-0 win with a goal after 81 minutes against European champions Greece in Athens. Angelos Bassinass, having lost somewhere his wings, didn’t reach the ball and Andrei Gusin, being face to face with the Greek goalkeeper, perfectly realized the possibility to give the team a lead from the distance of 11 meters.

Ukraine lead Group Two on 23 points with three matches left and stay seven points clear of Turkey, who won 6-0 in Kazakhstan for their largest international away victory.

That result lifted Turkey on to 16 points, one more than Greece, and means Ukraine need just two points to be sure of qualifying.

The Ukrainians have three more matches of the qualification: in Georgia (September 3) and in Ukraine against the team of Turkey (September 7) and the team of Albania (October 8). Victory in one of their three remaining matches will secure top spot and their first place in the finals of a leading tournament.
